Lancaster County is a wonderful place to live and visit for many reasons- beautiful rolling farmland, fresh meats and produce, unique local businesses. But what really drew me to call it home was the powerful sense of community in every town and village. One of the best ways to experience the true character of Lancaster County is at an Amish Mud Sale.
To really get to know a place, you have to go further than commercial tours and shopping centers. You have to find the heart of the community. Mud sales have been a Lancaster County tradition since the mid-1960s. The sales raise money to support the volunteer fire companies that serve our communities.
If you aren’t familiar with mud sales, no, they don’t sell mud. But they earned their nickname honest! Many of these sales and auctions are held outside. Usually during the late winter/early spring season before the busy planting season—prime time for mud. Make sure to bring your boots!
Auctions abound at these sales. There are usually several at once so that you can go from one to another looking for items that catch your eye. You’ll find handmade quilts, furniture, craft items, buggies and carriages, tools, building materials, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, tools, even livestock! Meet work horses and mules, check out Amish and English farm equipment, and fill up on home cooking sold on site.
What better way to end a day out in the mud than by coming back to our B&B. Warm up with a hot tea or coffee, fresh cookies and a relaxing shower. Take a nap in your cushy bed or read a book in the library. Soak in the simple, slow paced culture Lancaster County is known for.
