Springtime in Lancaster County

Spring in Lancaster County

As the snow begins to melt, we’re warming up for another busy spring! Spring in Lancaster County offers beautiful sights, exciting events and as always, the perfect place to slow down and smell the flowers!

One of the most iconic springtime events in Amish country are our Mud Sales. So named because of the typically muddy conditions of the fields the auctions are held on in the spring, these sales have everything you could want from a trip to Lancaster County. And I mean everything! Quilts, buggies, farm equipment, toys, furniture, tools, dishware and so much more are up for grabs, and the proceeds all go to benefit local volunteer fire companies, made up of largely Amish and Mennonite members.

There’s no better way to immerse yourself in an authentic Lancaster County experience than ankle deep in mud! Just remember your rubber boots! Check here for the 2019 schedule.

One of our very favorite ways to see the Amish countryside is back for the season on March 2nd. Strasburg Scooter Tours promise “a postcard in every turn,” and they deliver! Their Covered Bridge Tour offers a guided tour of some of Lancaster County’s beautiful 19th century covered bridges over 35+ miles of scenic farmland.

If you prefer trains to scooters, you can visit the Strasburg Railroad right next door. The oldest operating railroad in the country, Strasburg Railroad offers 45-minute trips through Amish countryside with audio commentary providing interesting facts and history about both the train and the landscape.

Add a Picnic Lunch package to your stay at The Hollinger House to take with you and stop halfway along at Groff’s Grove or Leaman’s Place Grove to enjoy your meal among the trees. You can catch the next train back to the station after your leisurely meal.
